How to get sap out of clothes

Hey there, fellow moms! As a busy single mother, I know we've got enough on our plates without having to deal with sap all over our kids' clothes, including custom vacation shirts . But don't worry, 'cause I've been through it and come out the other side with some handy tricks to share.

Figuring Out What We're Up Against

You know how it goes – one minute the kids are playing in the yard, climbing trees or exploring the woods, and the next, they come back with clothes smeared in that sticky sap. Sap is basically nature's super glue, and it can be a real pain to remove. It hardens quickly and seems to cling to fabric like there's no tomorrow. But understanding its properties is the first step in getting rid of it.

Method for getting sap out of clothes

Use Rubbing Alcohol to get rid off sap

  • How it works: Rubbing alcohol has the power to break down the sticky sap molecules, loosening its grip on the fabric.
  • Instructions:Soak a cotton ball or a clean cloth in rubbing alcohol.Gently dab the sap-stained area with the soaked cotton ball. Be careful not to rub too hard as it might spread the sap or damage the fabric.Keep dabbing until you see the sap starting to dissolve and come off. You might need to use a few cotton balls depending on the size of the stain.Once the sap is mostly gone, wash the clothing as you normally would.
  • Best for: Fresh sap stains.

Olive Oil for removing sap

  • How it functions: Olive oil can act as a lubricant, helping to soften the hardened sap so it can be more easily removed.
  • What to do:Pour a small amount of olive oil directly onto the sap stain.Let it sit for a few minutes to penetrate and soften the sap.Using a soft-bristled brush or your fingertips, gently work the oil and sap together. You'll notice the sap starting to lift off.Wipe away the excess oil and sap with a clean cloth. Then, wash the garment to get rid of any remaining residue.
  • Ideal for: Sap stains that have started to harden.

Freezing for Easier Sap Removal

  • How it does the trick: Cold temperatures make the sap brittle, allowing us to chip it away.
  • Here's the drill:Put the sap-stained clothing in a plastic bag and pop it in the freezer for an hour or two.Once it's frozen, take it out and carefully scrape the sap off with a dull knife or the edge of a credit card. The sap should break off in small pieces. After scraping, you can use one of the above methods to remove any remaining sap residue and then wash the item.
  • Best used for: Sap stains where the sap has formed a thick, hard layer.

Special Considerations for Different Fabrics

If you're dealing with delicate fabrics like silk or rayon, be extra cautious. For silk, try using a very small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and test it on a hidden part of the fabric first. For rayon, the freezing method might be your best bet, followed by gentle dabbing with rubbing alcohol. Always avoid harsh scrubbing or using strong chemicals that could damage these more sensitive materials.
